We’ll get our first look at the new cabinet under Premier John Hogan in a political setting today as the House of Assembly reopens after a significant break to accommodate the Liberal leadership.
Premier Hogan did nearly a complete rearrangement of the chairs, leaving only a few holdovers from the Furey cabinet intact in their previous roles. He also did something that has rarely been seen in Newfoundland and Labrador—appointing a person with no legal background as attorney-general.
Attorneys-general are usually lawyers, although the late Chris Decker, who was a man of the cloth and not a lawyer, was appointed to the role in the 90’s by Premier Brian Tobin.
Hogan has no trouble having John Haggie as justice minister and attorney general.
He says there is precedent throughout the country as well as Newfoundland and Labrador.
