Health Minister Krista Lynn Howell and Education Minister Bernie Davis say no cuts will be made to the glucose monitoring pilot project or the school lunch program now that the sugar tax is being dropped.
Diabetes Canada, and Heart and Stroke both raised concerns now that the tax has been repealed.
Minister Howell calls the glucose monitoring program a success, even hinting at further expansion in the weeks to come.
“There are different allocations of funding throughout the department and that’s the magic of the budgeting process—that is how you determine where your priorities lie and what opportunities you have to fund different projects and different initiatives, and this is one that is certainly a priority in our department,” she told reporters.
More information is expected in the coming weeks.
Education Minister Bernard Davis says he’s also hoping to expand the school lunch program to include all grades, but did not give a timeline.
