A family of five who were stranded on the highway outside Happy Valley-Goose Bay on the weekend during a winter storm were rescued and are okay—but it took a valiant effort involving many people.
Their vehicle got stuck in a snowstorm about 45 km outside town so one of the occupants, a woman, left on foot to go for help. RCMP officers responded in two separate vehicles, trying to get to the family in high winds, heavy snow and frigid temperatures.
Police contacted Goose Bay Search and Rescue for assistance who, in turn, engaged Grey Rock Mining to send out some of their snowplows.
The two officers got out of their vehicle and walked the highway in an effort to find the woman. They located her, covered in snow and extremely cold, and gave their winter clothing to her. A short time later, Paramedics and Search and Rescue arrived, and the woman was treated for hypothermia.
Grey Rock Mining dispatched a second plow to help reach the remaining four occupants of the stranded vehicle and lead them back to town.
