Accused sexual predator Tony Humby has pleaded not guilty to separate charges that were laid during his current trial in provincial court.
Humby’s trial on 72 sexual violence charges against 11 youth or young men has been continuing, on and off, since last August.
Those charges were first laid against him and co-accused Bruce Escott in 2023.
Escott has since been convicted and sentenced to 13 years in prison.
But in the midst of it all, an additional 17 charges were filed against Humby in late 2024.
They include eight counts involving a 12th alleged victim, seven charges of human trafficking, and two counts of sexual assault alleged to have occurred while he’s been in custody at HMP.
In provincial court this morning his lawyer, Mark Gruchy, formally entered not guilty pleas to those charges as well, maintaining Humby’s innocence on all of the sexual violence allegations to date.
Those pleas come as the larger case nears a critical juncture; namely a Jordan application by the defence to have some or all of the original 72 counts thrown out due to trial delays.
Scheduling has been an issue throughout the case given the sheer amount of evidence and testimony, which has all but wrapped up.
A clearer picture of how the two separate matters will proceed is anticipated when they’re called on back-to-back days next week.
