The mayor of Port aux Basques is calling the wind damage caused to the Bruce II Sports Centre a “devastating” blow to the town.
Mark Andrews says the roof of the complex is folded over on itself thanks to last night’s winds.
Andrews says not having the facility available has a profound impact on a lot of people.
The facility is where people go to skate, play hockey, curl, swim and make use of the gym. He calls the damage a “gut punch” to the community.
He says repairs to the roof had only been completed this summer, and now all that’s gone.
The town, which suffered devastating damage during Hurricane Fiona, is assessing the damage, but in the meantime, the facility is closed to the public. He hopes to have the centre reopened “sooner rather than later.”
