The minister responsible says government is working with Transport Canada to fill a key position for the province’s water bomber fleet.
The Chief Pilot’s resignation comes into effect today.
The Water Bomber and Air Ambulance Pilots association calls the departure a “significant loss to the organization” and will “negatively affect operations culture, decision making, oversight” and flight safety.
The pilots say in the absence of a qualified and approved Chief Pilot, Air Services will no longer be able to continue operations beyond June 29th.
According to a letter written by concerned pilots, Transport Canada could issue a Notice of Suspension of their Air Operator Certificate under the Aeronautics Act should the organization fail to obtain suitable management for commercial flight operations.
That’s a serious concern as forest fire season begins.
Transportation Minister Barry Petten says government is aware of the situation, and is working on it.
“We can’t help it if someone retires and moves on. Good for them; I wish them well. We know the issue, we’re aware of the issue, we’re dealing with Transport Canada in the interim to deal with this,” Petten responded. “We’re hoping to have a replacement in place soon…we will be ready for this coming season.”
