The iconic airport lounge at Gander International has been designated as a provincial Registered Heritage Structure.
Heritage NL says the airport lounge, known the world over as a shining example of mid-century modern design and architecture, was built in 1958 and opened to the traveling public in 1959.
The departures lounge was designed by Canadian architect John M. Lyle and Associates and features terrazzo floors and the mural “Flight and It’s Allegories” by Kenneth Lochhead.
Chair of Heritage NL’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, Stephanie Power calls the designation a “deeply meaningful and invaluable milestone for the international lounge.”
