A Newfoundland-born actor and writer has been nominated for four Canadian Screen Awards for her original TV series.
Samora Smallwood, who already has a number of awards under her belt, is nominated for best lead performance, best writing, best directing, and best series for her show Coming Home.
Smallwood says she enjoys telling Canadian stories through a lens that isn’t always seen.
Smallwood uses herself as an example. She says as someone who is bi-racial – her mother is from Newfoundland and her dad is West African – she likes telling stories that are more “nuanced.”
She believes that a lot of people who have never visited Newfoundland have an idea of it that is similar to how people from America tend to view the rest of Canada. She has a film that she is soon filming in the province that looks at things from a viewpoint similar to how she grew up.
