The Town of Gander is trying to get a handle on how many people are interested in attending events planned to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
Mayor Percy Farwell says Gander has been the focus of much attention over the last quarter century after area residents took in thousands of so-called ‘plane people’ stranded when North American airspace was closed following the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center.
The town is hoping that those interested in attending events planned for this September register in advance so they can get a better idea about potential numbers.
He credits the Broadway musical Come from Away for keeping the story alive.
“There are multiple millions of people who have seen it” says Farwell, “we get visitations regularly from places around the world, people who have just seen the show and are reaching out. Even 20-odd years later.” He says a special production just for Gander will continue this year, “there’s been 50,000 people who have come to Gander to see that show in the last three years.”
