The wreck of the Baltic III has made it through another winter, not necessarily unscathed but still intact.
The carrier ran aground in the Bay of Islands about 14 months ago but crews have been unable to move the ship out of harm’s way.
Significant ice buildup on the deck has largely melted away, and crews have identified a large crack in the deck plating.
Ice buildup over the winter also impeded access to the shoreline, but that has dissipated allowing a resumption of shoreline surveys.
Bruce English, senior response officer with the Canadian Coast Guard, says the Baltic III is still in one piece.
He says the insurance company has a tender out to hire a salvage company to go in and remove the ship.
