A former teacher and volleyball coach was berated by one of his victims and their supporters as he was escorted out of the courtroom after being sentenced to almost 20 years in prison for dozens of sexual violence offences.
Markus Hicks, now 34, was arrested in September of 2023, shocking the local school and sporting community.
The Paradise man was a mentor in positions of trust at both Beaconsfield junior High and Waterford Valley High School when he was charged with no less than 150 offences against 24 people, many of them teens he taught, coached and knew.
And they thought they knew him, until the rumours started and his depths of sexual depravity were brought to public light.
Hicks created numerous female aliases online to lure victims to his Paradise home for oral and anal sex, all under the guise of being a woman.
To pull it off he created a space in his home, complete with a so-called “gloryhole,” to hide his identify while satisfying his insatiable sexual appetite.
In sentencing Hicks this morning, Provincial Court Chief Judge Robin Fowler noted the selfish level of deceit and resulting “horrific” impact on his victims, who ranged in age from 15 to 19 — one of them resorting to two showers a day “just to wash Markus off.”
Hicks was sentenced to 18 years and six months in total. But with time already served since his arrest, he has about 14 years left to go.
