The name of the federal riding currently known as Cape Spear is changing to better reflect the region it covers.
2025 was the first year that Cape Spear was contested in an election following a change in electoral boundaries. It was previously known as St. John’s South-Mount Pearl.
MP Tom Osborne says during the last federal election he heard from residents in Mount Pearl and Paradise who were confused about being included in the Cape Spear riding, so he committed to getting the name changed.
Osborne says the riding will now be known as Cape Spear-Mount Pearl-Paradise better reflecting the makeup of the riding from its most easterly point to the most westerly.
The name change is part of a bill currently making its way through the House of Commons.
