The provincial government tables its very first budget this week and the Memorial University Campus Coalition will be watching for relief for post secondary students.
Nathan Gillingham is the Executive Director of External Affairs with Memorial University’s Student’s Union but also represents the Campus Coalition.
Memorial University, which has seen a drop in enrollment, is facing a $20 million revenue shortfall and has already announced plans to divest itself of some properties, as well as cuts to some programs and changes to its executive structure.
Earlier this year the province announced that it would freeze tuition rates at MUN next fall until the university gets its fiscal house in order.
Gillingham just wants to make sure government makes good on previous commitments.
“We’re not asking for the sun and the stars here” says Gillingham, “we’re simply asking for what’s already been promised.” He says “the way things are currently going are unsustainable.”
