Work to extend the life of Goodyear’s Dam on the Exploits River about 4 km upstream from the Grand Falls Generating Station has been given the environmental green light.
The dam, which was built in 1911, underwent emergency repairs in 2015. Recent assessments identified continued deterioration and movement within the dam that could lead to structural failure. That would have a significant impact on power generation, fish habitat and the town of Grand Falls-Windsor downstream.
NL Hydro says the work will include buttressing the north and south sections of the dam, constructing a new fishway, and filling in the existing fishway.
