The Minister of Labrador Affairs is scheduled to meet Indigenous leaders in Sheshatshiu today after a violent incident in the town this week has left the community reeling.
A woman is dead, a man has been injured, and a 29-year-old man is facing charges of second-degree murder and assault following the incident on Wednesday.
Minister Lela Evans says Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation Chief Eugene Hart invited her to the community to provide additional support.
“We (will) work with Chief Hart and the supporters there to see what’s needed. It’s not just about this one instance. We want to make sure that resources will be available in future. And also, what can we do to address gender-based violence, but also other issues that they’ve been calling for.”
“The Innu have been calling for help with policing, drugs and with alcohol abuse.”
