Two major telecom companies have been given until today to scrap their latest fees following a directive from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.
Earlier this year, the CRTC made changes to the Telecommunications Act that would ban fees that would make it harder for Canadians to activate, change or cancel their internet or cellphone plans.
The regulator has since flagged Bell and TELUS for violating the move that was put in place to give consumers more flexibility without having to worry about additional fees.
Bell Canada recently added a $40 activation fee for new customers, while TELUS introduced a $15 SIM card fee last week.
In letters sent to the companies last Friday, the CRTC stated that the fees must be eliminated effective today or risk facing disciplinary action.
Rogers has also come under fire by the regulator for new setup and shipping fees put in place following the changes to the Telecommunications Act, but is not subject to today’s elimination deadline.
