U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his intentions to resign after nearly two years in power.
Starmer led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in the summer of 2024, however his popularity has plummeted in recent months, with calls to resign coming from within his own party.
Those calls were amplified last week when former Greater Manchester mayor Andy Bernham was elected to parliament under the Labour banner – putting him in a position to challenge Starmer for the leadership post.
“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace,” Starmer said during his resignation speech this morning.
Starmer will stay on as caretaker prime minister until a new leader is chosen.
