The opposition says the lack of communication from the department about lengthy traffic delays heading toward St. John’s is disappointing and frustrating.
Slowdowns have been reported near the Foxtrap Access Road at all hours of the day with lines of traffic stretched back several kilometres from the actual construction site.
Some drivers decided to cut down through Holyrood to avoid the mess, only to be met with another hang up due to construction on the main road.
Liberal Leader John Hogan says better communication from the Department of Transportation could have prevented some drivers from having to wait hours on end over the weekend.
“There was no heads up about the fact that this was going to happen. People could have staggered their trips. Maybe people could have left at different times yesterday or even come in this morning, if that was possible,” he told VOCM Open Line with Brian Callahan.
“We also have a lot of tourists who are traveling across the province. That’s not what we want to showcase here in Newfoundland and Labrador, that we can’t manage to do construction and pave our roads so people can move freely across the province.”
