The provincial government has responded to widespread public concern about restricted parental access to their kids’ medical files with new digital health technology in the form of CorCare.
Out of the blue, parents were being told that they would have total access to the medical history of children under 12, but only consensual access to the health information of those 12-15 years of age. Anyone 16 and over has total control.
Premier Tony Wakeham says while the current laws and policies have been in place for decades, the implementation of the new digital health platform has exposed a fundamental misalignment between existing statutes and the expectations of families.
Government is going to immediately review the Personal Health Information Act and other relevant legislation. Following consultations, it will introduce legislative changes this fall to ensure that parental access to their children’s medical records is protected.
