The town of Labrador City is blanketed in a smokey haze this morning as crews battle wildfires on all sides.
About 120 people had to be evacuated from areas outside of the town yesterday due to the Walsh River fire.
That blaze is burning west of Lab City. According to the provincial government’s wildfire map there are four others also burning to the east and south of the community, though those are much smaller in size and as of now have prompted no evacuations.
Mayor Jordan Brown says there are also fires burning on the Quebec side of the border that are contributing to the level of smoke in the area, and they are “completely surrounded.”
He says crews are getting ready to go back at suppression efforts today.
He says suppression efforts went well last night, but the weather today will be challenging as it will be hot and dry with some wind.
While evacuations have only taken place outside of the town, Brown is encouraging residents to be prepared. They should have their vehicles gassed up and a bag ready to go in case conditions change.
“These things can change at the drop of a hat,” says Brown, who urges people to get their information from official sources and to listen to the directions of officials on the ground.
