The Ontario government has announced the route chosen for the development of a so-called ‘Northern Shield’ energy corridor, to move Alberta oil to refineries in Sarnia, Ontario.
Premier Doug Ford, who made the announcement alongside Alberta Premier Danielle Smith in Calgary, says the pipeline could move an estimated 500,000 barrels of oil per day, with plans to explore the development of further pipelines.
Ford says he plans to work with Indigenous communities on the concept.
“The Northern Shield Energy Corridor will create new opportunities for Indigenous people, including equity partnerships, job training and community investments.”
Ford also expressed a desire to eventually see a pipeline extended right to the east coast.
“Wouldn’t it be great folks if we could bring this pipeline right across the country? Right over to Irving?” He says ultimately, that decision will be up to east coast provinces to work out.
Discussions are already underway with the Major Projects Office. No timelines have yet been set, pending the results of a feasibility study.
