The mayor of St. Mary’s has a long list of people to thank now that a problem that’s been festering in the town for more than two decades is finally being addressed.
Vats of largely solidified fish sauce, left to rot in a plant abandoned in the 1990s, finally started being removed from the heavily damaged building this week – bound for the landfill site in Sunnyside.
Mayor Steve Ryan, who has been working to have the problem addressed for years, says he’s thrilled that it’s finally being taken care of, and will soon be nothing more than a bad memory.

Ryan had a long list of people and agencies to thank for finally getting the issue dealt with.
“Our MHA, who’s been involved since day one, the minister himself, who put this over the finish line, the company, Capital Environment which is doing the clean up, our consultant, and we even invited the town of Sunnyside, because they’ve been a big part of this project too.”
