The town of Gander is expecting large crowds for a ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001.

The annual ceremony is usually well attended, however this year is especially momentous as it marks a quarter century since the airport town’s population suddenly swelled by thousands of stranded plane passengers.

Mayor Percy Farwell says the service recognizes the lives lost and the extraordinary efforts of towns like Gander when North America airspace was closed and trans-Atlantic flights bound for the U.S. started landing from all over.

“In the case of those of us who were involved in the various communities and locations in the aftermath, we feel that we are blessed to have had that opportunity.”

Hundreds are expected to attend the ceremony at the Steele Community Centre next month – including several special guests yet to be announced.

Attendance is free, but those interested must have a ticket reserved well in advance.

The first lot of tickets have been released.
