The calls for the federal government to extend its temporary suspension of the Fuel Excise Tax beyond the upcoming long holiday weekend just keep on coming.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the affordability measure back in April, resulting in a 10 cent a litre savings on gas.
It’s scheduled to come to an end on Labour Day.
The Opposition Conservatives and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation are both calling on Ottawa to extend the savings beyond the holiday weekend.
Federation spokesperson Franco Terrazzano says federal fuel tax relief makes life more affordable for all Canadians and goes beyond gas price savings by reducing operating costs for the food, agriculture, construction and delivery industries.
Terrazzano says if the Prime Minister is serious about affordability, he should immediately leave the tax suspension in place, then “go further” and “eliminate the gas tax permanently.”
