Memorial University has eliminated more than 100 positions as part of cost-cutting measures outlined in its most recent budget.
The university is trying to make up for an operating deficit of well over $20 million.
The elimination of 107 positions will result in approximately $12.7 million in annual cost reductions.
19 involved redundancies or contracts were ended early or not renewed.
Those affected have been contacted.
The breakdown includes 51 vacancies through retirement – including 47 through a voluntary retirement program, the elimination of 37 vacant positions, and 19 that were cut by the university. (involuntary)
The reductions affect a range of professions including leadership roles and management positions, unionized staff and faculty.
MUN President Janet Morrison says the choices were difficult “because they involved people who contributed meaningfully” to the university.
Memorial says no further university-wide workforce reductions are planned this fiscal year.
