Ordinary citizens who jumped into action to help save a life will be recognized today by St. John Ambulance.

Seven people will be presented with Silver Life-Saving Awards in a ceremony at the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist this afternoon.

Among them are Charlotte Cook who found a friend unresponsive in her home. She performed CPR for 15 minutes until paramedics arrived, saving her life.

Nicole Garrett responded when she saw a man collapse in the Costco parking lot. She performed CPR while another bystander ran for an AED which she then used to help get the man’s heart pumping again.

Anna Mesh saved her 16-year-old brother Aaron when he started choking. She performed abdominal thrusts on her brother, dislodging the obstruction in his throat and allowing him to breathe again.

Makenzie Roberts saved her mother who woke her while choking. She delivered back blows and abdominal thrusts and restored her mother’s ability to breathe.

Shelley Squibb performed CPR on a friend’s family member who suddenly stopped breathing. She kept the woman alive until paramedics arrived to take her to hospital.

Constable Carley Matheson, Dathan Anthony and Charles Hynes worked together to help a man who collapsed in the parking lot of Coastal Marine Supplies in Mount Pearl. The three maintained CPR for about ten minutes until firefighters and paramedics arrived.

And Donna Parsley and James McCarthy came to the aid of a man who was experiencing a life-threatening emergency. They began CPR until emergency responders arrived and his breathing was restored.

Meanwhile an investiture ceremony will also be held promoting Garry Stamp to the grade of Officer in the Order of St. John,, while Judy Chafe, Jill Locke, Jeff Morrissey and Reginald Skinner will be invested as Serving Members of the Order of St. John.

Service medals will also be presented to Scott Thistle, Tina Smith, Sara Hawkins and Sean Sullivan.
