The official opposition isn’t impressed with government’s decision to have a 30-minute question period every day during the Churchill Falls debate in the legislature next week.

Premier Tony Wakeham made the announcement on Tuesday, following concerns from the opposition that they would only have 45 minutes in total to question Government members over the course of the four-day debate.

The Liberals say the addition of question period will not allow for “proper analysis and debate,” noting that the format only gives people 45 seconds for questions and answers, meaning that a “meaningful examination of the deal” would be “impossible.”

They worry that the “historic debate” would be turned into “political theatre” as a result.

Instead, they want to see a committee-style format, similar to how the 2025 debate was structured, which gives members the opportunity to expand on their questions and gives those being questioned time to offer comprehensive answers.

They also have an issue with the time at which question period will be held. They state that government wants to hold it late in the evening, instead of the regular time of 1:30 in the afternoon. They question if that is a “tactic to hide the premier and minister from the media and the public.”
