Gander marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks yesterday. Former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien drew a standing ovation for a pointed message directed at Americans. He said nobody should mistake Canada’s tolerance for lack of determination.
The President of the Airline Pilots’ Association of Canada was among those who attended the 25th anniversary commemorations of 9/11 in Gander yesterday.
Captain Tim Perry says a sense of gratitude is what motivated him to travel to Gander.

“It wasn’t just passengers who received the incredible outpouring of support and hospitality from people in Gander.” He says they had a job to do and he came to Gander to “express our gratitude.”
The province’s representative in the federal cabinet, Minister Joanne Thompson, calls 9/11 a terrifying event.

“I remember being absolutely frightened,” says Thompson, and watching plane after plane land at the airport in St. John’s. She says despite feeling the same fear, people “demonstrated that sense of who we are and came forward without question.”
