The mayor of St. John’s says the city’s partnership with The Gathering Place to clean up needles and other debris in the downtown will help complement efforts already underway.
The pilot project, known as Pitching In, will see clients of The Gathering Place employed to help clean up the downtown.

Danny Breen says litter is a “big concern” for the city, noting that they get a lot of calls regarding discarded needles.
He says staff will pick up needles in public places, and people should call 311 to make that happen. That said, they can always “do more,” according to Breen, and this initiative will allow them to be more “proactive” in their approach.
