The Federation of Labour says the positive elements of the federal government’s proposed new omnibus Building Canada Strong Act have been overshadowed by changes being made to the Canada Labour Code, allowing a single minister the authority to end a legal strike.

Bill C-39 has been introduced in the House of Commons and has not yet been passed.

Jessica McCormick of the Federation of Labour calls that a “red line” that cannot be crossed.

“…because of the incredible and fundamental power that a strike and withdrawing our labour would give workers at the collective bargaining table. So, legislation that limits or strips any group of workers of that fundamental right has to be opposed by workers and unions right across the country, and that’s been our response to this omnibus bill.”
