This is a big weekend on the “fighting cancer” front with one of the top fundraisers taking place in the metro region.

The first installment of the Polka Dot Trot took place in Corner Brook last weekend, attracting people from three dozen communities in the region.

Laura Ivany, development officer with the Cancer Care Foundation, says money raised goes to the four cancer hospitals in the province.

“If people wish to support, they can go to polkadottrot.org. We’re so thankful to all our supporters and sponsors,” says Ivany.

“The Cancer Care Foundation supports Corner Brook, Grand Falls-Windsor, Gander and St. John’s.”

Katelyn Hogan, who is with Team M&M, one of the top fundraising groups in the event, started the journey seven years ago with Polka Dot Trot. The name M&M has nothing to do with the candy, but are the names of her parents, Mick and Madeline.

It’s her favourite day of the year, to look out and see the different colour T-shirts and knowing that they’re helping a lot of cancer patients.
