The Members’ Compensation Review Committee is recommending that all MHAs get a pay raise of more than $20,000 each next year.
The committee’s report looks at the yearly salaries of all provincial politicians, as well as the money they earn for additional roles they take on in the legislature.
It recommends that the base salary for MHAs be set at $117,000 – a nearly $22,000 increase from the current salary of just over $95,000 per year.
The report also recommends increases for extra roles elected officials may take on in the House of Assembly, including the salary of the Speaker and Leader of the Official Opposition to rise to $61,000, and compensation for the leader of the third party to increase to $33,000 – amounts over and above their base salary.
The committee recommends that the changes come into effect on April 1st of next year.
The report will now be brought before the House of Assembly Management Commission for consideration, and will ultimately need to be brought to the legislature for a vote before being passed.
A technical briefing on the report is set for Wednesday, October 21st at 11:00 a.m., and will be broadcast live on the House of Assembly’s social media pages.
House speaker Paul Lane will speak to media about the report today at 3:00 p.m.
