Salvage crews are reporting good progress in trying to remove the grounded Baltic III from Cedar Cove before another winter sets in.
In an update shared by the Canadian Coast Guard last week, the salvage company, Resolve Marine, had managed to pull the bow and midship sections another 31 metres closer to shore.
Work continues on cutting and removing metal from the bulk carrier with 63 per cent of the overall tonnage removed to-date.
The vessel, which ran aground near Lark Harbour in February of 2025, has been battered by wind and waves causing environmental concerns. Some oil residue had already been detected at the site and containment efforts were established.
As the fall weather sets in, there have once again been signs of oil contamination. Work is underway to contain the pollution.
Crews are also working to remove any remaining fuel on board in areas that are safely accessible.
