The President of the NLTA says a shortage of affordable housing is hampering efforts to recruit and retain teachers in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
The resignation of the principal at Peacock Primary made headlines earlier this month.
That brought to seven the total number of vacancies at the school – a single position has since been filled.
Union President Dale Lambe recently paid a visit to Goose Bay to speak with teachers about what they’re facing.
He says principle among their concerns was the high cost of living in the region.
“The cost of rentals up there is quite significant, but should adequate housing come available, they would be able to secure more teachers in that community.”
The issue is one recently highlighted by the Happy Valley-Goose Bay town council and Lake Melville MHA Keith Russell who have both called on government to urgently address infrastructure and social needs in the town.
Russell says a lack of action to address issues facing his district is what led to his decision to quit the PC caucus and sit as an Independent.
