The province’s justice minister has confirmed that police officers with the RNC will start wearing body cameras next year.
Helen Conway Ottenheimer says the program will start being rolled out in the 2027-2028 fiscal year.
She says the groundwork was laid for the program in the spring budget with the introduction of the new digital evidence management system, also known as D.E.M.S.
Conway Ottenheimer says there are about 400 active users of that system within the RNC.
She calls the rollout of body cameras phase two of that project.
She says that will begin in the 2027-2028 fiscal year, which begins next April. She says $900,000 was allocated in the last budget for the implementation of the initiative.
Conway Ottenheimer believes the implementations of body cameras “goes to the heart of public trust between residents and police.”
She says transparency and accountability are fundamental objectives of the project.
