The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is going digital with the way it collects and manages certain types of evidence.
RNC will now be using Axon’s Digital Evidence Management System, a smartphone app that lets officers upload evidence from the field.
It says the app allows officers to submit community requests for digital evidence, conduct audio recordings, take pictures, and retrieve photo and video files directly from a work-issued phone.
The evidence is stored in a secure manner and can be accessed by others working on the file, which will eliminate the need to travel with USB drives and CDs to conduct their investigative work.
Constable Steph Myers says the new system will significantly reduce administrative burden.
“It just takes away so many small jobs that take up a lot of our time through these big and even small investigations. And it’ll allow officers to have everything in the one place. All the officers can access it. The Crown Attorneys can access it. So it’s just, there are so many people benefiting from this new system.”
A pilot project for the initiative began over a year ago, and the full rollout is expected by early summer.
