Memorial University’s Student Union is celebrating Pride on Campus 2019.
A flag raising ceremony was held yesterday afternoon to kickstart two-weeks of celebrations at MUN. Pride on Campus gives students, faculty, staff and community members the opportunity to raise awareness, discuss issues, and celebrate.

Student Theodore Walsh is heading into his final year of studies at Memorial.
Walsh says Pride on Campus is essential for everyone, but especially the most vulnerable, such as first year students, those from rural communities, or international students. He says Pride support and programming is important for those who come from places where they were not permitted to openly express themselves.
Walsh grew up in St. Mary’s Bay, and says while he was fortunate, he can relate.
Walsh and a close friend started a Gender and Sexual Awareness group at their school, and got their foot in the door towards acceptance for gay and lesbian people, but admits being transgender wasn’t as open for discussion.
