Many residents of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s offered a helping held during last month’s State of Emergency to make sure fire hydrants in the community were clear of snow.
Munn Insurance and the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services came together at the Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s fire hall last night to recognize members of the community who stepped up during the State of Emergency.

As record-breaking snow fell on the Avalon, Munn Insurance started a social media initiative encouraging residents to be “hydrant heroes,” and clear snow in their neighbourhoods.
COO of Munn Insurance, Adam Nolan says it began as a way to promote safety in the community. Nolan says the response was overwhelming. They received more than 100 submissions of people shoveling out fire hydrants.

Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s Mayor Carol McDonald says she is very proud of her community’s work.
McDonald says the community is together, and everyone has each other’s backs. She says when anything happens in the town, residents always chip in to do what has to be done.
