Changing demographics are a big part of what’s behind a 19 percent vacancy rate in the capital city’s inventory of low-cost housing.
Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary this week showcased one of the units available in hopes of generating greater interest for those in the low-income bracket.
O’Leary says many of the vacancies involve three and four bedroom units, which were built at a time when families were larger. She says the greatest demand right now is for one and two bedroom units.
O’Leary says they’re coming up with a plan, but says they don’t intend to sell off vacant structures.
She says they’re looking at making housing more affordable for everyone through their Affordable Housing Working Group and their 2018 Affordable Housing Strategy.
