Fire crews made quick work of a fire at an east end apartment building last night.

At about 9:00 p.m. fire crews from three stations responded to a fire at an apartment building on MacDonald Drive in St. John’s. When firefighters arrived they found smoke in the main stairwell and hallways of the building. Upon further investigation they discovered a garbage can on fire in a laundry room in the building’s basement.

The fire was quickly extinguished, with minimal damage done.

Evacuated residents were sent to an adjacent apartment building to stay warm as crews dealt with the situation. There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
