It’s going to be stormy for a while on Friday across most of the island, including metro.
The amount of snow expected is not overwhelming but high winds will whip it around and reduce visibility at a crucial time—during the morning commute.
Mike Vandenberg, a meteorologist with the Gander Weather Office, says the snow will start late Thursday night or overnight and dump about 10 centimetres in metro.
He says easterly winds in the 80 to 90 kilometre range will make for a messy commute.
Meanwhile, Marine Atlantic has put out an advisory that it anticipates interruptions to ferry crossings between noon Thursday, and noon Friday.
Extreme Cold in Labrador
Environment Canada has also issued an extreme cold warning for parts of Labrador West, including the Churchill Valley area.
Overnight Wednesday into early Thursday morning, temperatures will drop well below -37°C. The minimum wind chill will be in the area of -48°C.
Officials say such extreme temperatures affect everyone. Cover up, as frostbite will develop on exposed skin within minutes.
Extreme cold warnings are set when temperatures create a heightened risk of frost bite and hypothermia.
