A local pharmacist says it’s only a matter of time before the province sees its first case of novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
While Canada is still relatively low in terms of cases—with well under 100 confirmed cases being reported in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia—false information on COVID-19 is spreading faster than the virus itself.
Hand sanitizer and masks are reportedly scarce around the world, as people are buying them up and re-selling them at an extreme mark up.

Robert Doyle, a community pharmacist, says local pharmacies are being inundated with people looking for masks, which has forced them to limit purchases to one box per person at some pharmacies as suppliers have limited inventory.

Doyle says masks won’t stop you from becoming sick. They are more effective for people who have the illness, a sentiment being repeatedly shared by the World Health Organization.
He says you should wear the mask if you have the illness, which will help prevent it from spreading.
There are concerns that the shortage will mean there won’t be enough masks for medical personal who need to treat people with the virus.

As many health organizations have said, good handwashing is the safest way to prevent contracting COVID-19.
Doyle reiterates that proper handwashing is the best way to prevent falling ill. He suggests washing thoroughly in warm water for at least 20 seconds. Doyle adds that you should try to not touch your face.
To protect others, cough or sneeze into your elbow, and disinfect surfaces regularly. If you’re feeling ill, stay home.
