MHAs unanimously passed a Private Member’s Motion in the House of Assembly yesterday to expand the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act to include artificial intelligence systems.
The motion was brought forward by Liberal MHA Sara Stoodley.
She says federal privacy laws need to keep up with the increased power and capability of technology and algorithms.
Incredible amounts of personal and sensitive data are being collected when we accept terms and conditions says Stoodley, and greater controls are needed to ensure that data is better protected.
Discussion in the House of Assembly yesterday ranged from the information collected through retail points cards to the way in which cell phone and computer technology tracks your buying habits and maps your whereabouts.
