Another surge in the number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador is not unexpected says Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald.
There are 23 new positive cases in the province; all in the Eastern Health region. That compares to just four new confirmed cases announced yesterday. It brings the total number of confirmed cases in Newfoundland and Labrador to 175.
166 cases are in the Eastern Health region, three in Central Health, one in Western Health, and five in Labrador-Grenfell Health.
Fifteen people have been admitted to hospital, three of whom are in intensive care. Thirteen of those cases are in the Eastern Health region, one is in Central Health and one is in the Labrador-Grenfell region. The number of cases directly linked to Caul’s Funeral Home has not been updated since the 120 announced yesterday.
Dr. Fitzgerald is now laying out different resources for those struggling with mental health during this difficult time.
Testing numbers by region:

Ten people are considered to be recovered, and one death is linked with the illness.
Dr. Fitzgerald says the increased numbers do not come as a surprise and she is extending the Public Health Emergency Order for another 14 days.
Health Minister John Haggie says the province is in this for the long haul and he expects to sign many more extensions to the Public Health Emergency Order in the weeks and months ahead.
