The province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health says strict adherence to public health measures has effectively flattened what she calls the first wave of COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Local numbers remain unchanged today with just three active cases in the province and no new confirmed cases.
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says it’s important to continue to practice physical distancing and other measures to control the spread of illness.

She says she was heartened to see people diligently practicing safe social distancing, something she calls the most effective prevention measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19.)
That’s in contrast to pictures out of Toronto showing people tightly grouped together at Trinity Bellwoods Park, something Ontario Premier Doug Ford said looked like “a rock concert.”
Today’s VOCM Question of the Day surrounds the travel ban imposed by government to help halt the spread of COVID-19. A challenge of that travel ban will be heard in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador tomorrow.
There are exemptions to the travel ban, and Public Health officials weigh each application received.

Premier Dwight Ball says since May 4th, they’ve received over 3,200 travel exemption applications, only 7 per cent of which have been denied.
In the last 24 hours, 169 people came into Newfoundland and Labrador from all the province’s points of entry.
