A 32-year-old man is in custody after a violent altercation at a cabin in Trinity Bay on the weekend.

The RCMP say they received information late Friday night that the accused stole a boat to access a cabin on an island off Hickman’s Harbour, Random Island.

The man allegedly forced his way into the cabin a confronted a man and woman inside. Police say the confrontation turned violent when the man assaulted the couple with a weapon.

Matthew Benoit is being held in custody on a long list of offences, including two counts of assault and assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, theft over $5,000, break and enter, damage to property and uttering threats.

He’s scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. The investigation continues.
