Deer Lake Fire Rescue managed to knock down a grass fire in the town yesterday, but police say it could have been much worse.
The fire, on a vacant property on Moss’s Lane in Deer Lake was quickly contained.
RCMP say the fire originated from a homemade fire pit that was not properly extinguished, and burnt a considerable amount of land before it was knocked down.
Police say it had the potential to spread to other nearby properties.
The province has an outdoor fire ban in place.
