Four days in August have been set aside in Supreme Court to hear a constitutional challenge related to this province’s travel ban.
Kimberly Taylor, who is from Newfoundland and Labrador but now lives in Nova Scotia, launched the court action when she was denied entry to the province to attend her mother’s funeral.
The travel ban was imposed as an amendment to Bill-38 to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but it also allows certain exceptions on compassionate grounds.
Taylor’s mother, Eileen, died on May 5. On the same day, a limited number of MHAs returned to the legislature to amend the Bill to initiate the travel restrictions.

Taylor applied for the exemption but was denied. She appealed the decision and was still denied entry. She has since been permitted entry to the province.
Kim Taylor believes the travel ban violates her Charter rights. She and the Civil Liberties Association are taking the province to court.
This morning, Justice Don Burrage set aside four days during the week of August 4 to hear the matter.
