Newfoundland and Labrador is joining with the three other Atlantic Canadian provinces in an Atlantic bubble as of July 3.
While the province has been actively engaged in discussions on lifting travel restrictions in the region for some time, it appeared that Newfoundland and Labrador was one of the main holdouts.
Yesterday’s announcement seemed to catch some by surprise as it came on the heels of the official launch of the province’s new staycation campaign.
Premier Dwight Ball says the staycation concept is about boosting the local tourism industry. He says there are benefits attached to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians staying home and supporting local business.
Meanwhile, Premier Ball says if things continue to go well, travel restrictions involving provinces like Ontario and Alberta could be lifted by July 17.
The details on possible conditions or restrictions will be made at a later date, according to the Premier.
