Health officials have confirmed an outbreak of salmonella in the province with 27 cases reported this month.
While the source of the bacterial disease has yet to be identified, officials say none of the cases are related to recent food recalls involving red onions and peaches.
Several cases were initially confirmed at a retirement complex in St. John’s with one resident reportedly still being treated in hospital.
Salmonella is usually contracted by eating contaminated food but person-to-person transmission can also occur. Symptoms can include stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and dehydration.
Anyone experiencing such symptoms should seek medical attention and then stay at home until they’ve recovered.
